An Unassembled waterline resin model kit. Kit comes complete with everything except paint & glue. This model represents HMS Furious in 1918, after her first rebuild, with a landing deck and hanger aft and a flying off deck and hanger forward. The two decks were connected by gangways for the transfer of aircraft from one deck to another. In addition, a large crane and doorway were provided at the rear of the aft hanger for seaplane recovery. The normal complement was 16 aircraft. In this form experimental flying offs and landings were conducted. It was quickly found that the turbulence caused by the superstructure and large funnel made landing on the rear deck a very hazardous operation and all landings operations were discontinued, though flying off training and experiments from the forward deck continued. On July 7 1918, 2F1 Sopwidth Camels from Furious performed the first carrier born attack when they bombed the German Zeppelin base at Tondern. In conjunction with HMS Argus a more ambitious operation, an airborne torpedo attack on the German High seas Fleet anchored in the Jade was planned, but the war ended before it could be carried out. HMS Furious retained this form, with constant minor changes, until 1922 when she entered dock at Devonport for conversion into a flush decked Aircraft Carrier. Whats in the Box.
