The HMS Ark Royal was an aircraft carrier of the Royal Navy that served during the second world war. Completed in November 1938, the design was different from its precessors. It had two hangar decks, that were equipped to transport plenty of aircrafts. The Ark Royal served during a time where the employment of the air force for the navy was active for the first time. It served in a few of the most active naval events during the second world war. It was part of the first aerial and submarine killings in the war and, most of all, on the hunt for the German warship Bismarck. The Ark Royal was torpedoed by the German submarine U-81 on 13. November 1941 and sank on the following day. Its wreck was discovered by a BBC-Crew in December 2002, about 30 nmi (35 miles or 56 kilometers) away from Gibraltar.
