USS HORNET (CV 8) 1942. Yorktown’ class aircraft carrier built by Newport News and completed in 1940. 20,070 tons, 32.5 knots, armed with 8-5in, 16-1.1in, 28-20mm guns, carried up to 96 aircraft. Best known for the’Doolittle Raid’ in April 1942, when she launched 16 Army B-25 Mitchell bombers for an attack on the Japanese mainland.Continue reading
